Each one of us has something different to offer and contribute to this world. We are all just trying to figure out our lives and each of us does it differently.

For the 26-year old Ilonggo breakthrough fashion designer, Amanda “Bey” Treñas, everything she has achieved in her life right now came to her because she already knew what she wanted and she went for it wholeheartedly. As a matter of fact, she vividly remember being 15 years old and wanting to be a fashion designer. “At 15, I started designing dresses and having them made for myself.  It all began because I had designs of clothes in my mind that I wanted to wear but were not easily available here in Iloilo while I was growing up. But fashion design as a career, started two years ago when I was 23 years old.”

She fell in love with fashion design and she was incredibly determined to make it. “I have always been into fashion, even as a young girl. I remember dressing up as a fashion designer in one of the career weeks back in Assumption Iloilo. A couple of years after finishing my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology in De La Salle University (DLSU), I decided to pursue my inclination in fashion, and enrolled myself at Slim’s Fashion and Arts School in Makati.”

Just like Amanda, wear your heart on your sleeve today and let the world know that you follow and pursue what you love. “I enjoy fashion! It’s getting paid for doing something I love to do.”

Don’t sit around and wait for the timing to be just right. There’s no such thing as a perfectly opportune moment. For Amanda, she started dreaming big at such a young age. Hence, it allowed her to focus on what she exactly wanted. Had she waited for the perfect moment to start designing, she wouldn’t be where she is today. “Start designing! Perhaps enroll in some fashion design courses, talk to people in the fashion industry, and see where it leads you.”

Just like Amanda, work hard and dream big. You just have to go out there and make it happen for yourself. Stop procrastinating a goal you have.

Whatever place you’re rushing to or goal you are rushing to get, remember to enjoy the process too – otherwise what’s the point?

Amanda shares a bit of her challenge when it comes to designing. “There are days when I don’t feel it, so I don’t force myself to do it. I have noticed that if it doesn’t come from a place of inspiration, it would never be as good as the ones that were.”

They say that you can’t use up creativity and the only way to experience more creativity was to just keep creating. As for Amanda, she never stops trying. She felt that her responsibility to the people that looks up to her especially to the Ilonggo youth is “to keep going and keep growing.”

So don’t be cautious with your creativity – let it out. Some of it will be extraordinary and some mediocre. Even so, just keep creating.

We all need encouraging influences in our lives and it’s important to surround ourselves with them. Amanda has always looked up to fashion icons that continue to inspire her in her aesthetics in designing on whatever garment she’s working on. “My greatest and unfaltering style icons are Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Audrey Hepburn. They both have very timeless, tasteful and classic styles and they carry themselves with such elegance.”

Don’t waste time with people and in environments that don’t appreciate and value you for everything you have to offer. Amanda sees to it that she goes where her heart is. She surrounds herself with positive people and environments that are parallel to what she is passionate about. “It’s always fun to attend fashion events because first of all, you get to dress up – and not worry whether you’re over dressed, because chances are, you’re not. Secondly, you get to meet and be with people with the same interests and that always leaves me inspired.”

Just like snowflakes, there is no one else on this planet like you. No two people are alike. Being different is what makes us special and the world so exciting.

Amanda celebrates the ways in which her designs are special and unique and she’s making sure that she is not modeling it after someone. “Every designer has his/her own specific design aesthetic that defines his/her creative identity. And I believe that distinguishes us from each other.”

Confidence starts with beauty and beauty begins from comfort within. There are gorgeous girls hiding in the corners during parties afraid to talk to anyone. You can tell that they’re lacking confidence. Maybe they don’t think they’re pretty enough or they don’t think they have the right outfit on. This immediately dims their inner light.

Whether you are a man or woman, everyone deals with insecurities, especially in a world where our looks are given so much value. We aren’t what we eat and our flaws do not define us.

Amanda’s designs exude an exceptional message to women especially to young girls to find their safe place and stay with it. “My number one priority in designing clothes is to make the wearer feel beautiful and sexy. I stick to simple yet elegant that flatters one’s body especially to a woman’s body. It is when a woman feels confident that she carries herself best – because clothes don’t make a woman, but they can make her even better.”

There’s nothing more attractive than someone owning who they are in the skin they’re in. Just like Amanda, find what makes you comfortable and confident. Remember how special you are and wear it with pride!
