My shoulder very painful, masakit sobra — Thai import Jeng Bualee

Thai import Jeng Bualee was nursing an injured shoulder and played through physical and emotional pain in BaliPure’s Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference best-of-three semifinals opener.

Bothered by pain on her spiking hand, the veteran guest player was limited to her lowest output in the tournament – a paltry five-point outing compared to her preliminary round average of 16.4 markers per game.

Fortunately, her teammates stepped up to defeat Creamline, 22-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-21, Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan to move a step closer to a best-of-three championship series seat.

The 33-year-old hitter hurt her shoulder a week ago in BaliPure’s straight sets loss to the Power Smashers at the close of the prelims.

“My shoulder very painful, masakit sobra. I really want to play that’s why I’m so gigil to spike every ball very hard. That’s why when I go home masakit na,” said Bualee, who started playing as reinforcement in the local scene since 2006 before a long hiatus after winning the V-League title back in 2012. “After that I felt the effect every day, I thought it’s just outside but I feel inside pain talaga but I hope since I take good care of myself every day I can make it well.”

Water Defenders coach Roger Gorayeb was hesitant to field Bualee at first.

“Sumakit ang balikat niya nu’ng last game lang. Gusto ko nga sana na di na siya gamitin kaso baka pag-isipan ako ng ‘di maganda,” he said. “Siyempre import tapos hindi mo gagamitin parang inihuhulog namin ang laro. Pero sana by Tuesday maayos na siya.”

Aside from physical pain Bualee was also dealing with a heavy emotional baggage.

“Si Jeng kasi ‘yung kaibigan niya. Yung best friend niya namatay ‘yung nanay. (Tuesday) kasi sa Thailand umuulan tinamaan ng kidlat,” said Gorayeb, who was also dealing with emotional pain after the passing of his 70-year-old cousin a few days back.

“She’s just like my mom,” said Bualee. “Just last month before I came (here), we went to her province for a visit and she (best friend’s mom) she cooked for me. It’s just sad.”

Game 2 of the semis series is on Tuesday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City. Game 3, if necessary, is on Thursday.
