WATCH: Noven performs for wounded soldiers, opens up about controversy

“Tawag ng Tanghalan” champion Noven Belleza kept a positive attitude as he stepped out and performed for the first time more than a month after being charged with sexual assault.

Joined by the cast of the hit afternoon drama “Wildflower,” Belleza performed for wounded soldiers as well as hospital staff at the AFP Medical Center in Quezon City.

Belleza did a cover of Air Supply’s “The One That You Love,” one of the songs he sang in the grand finals of the talent search.

It was one of his first public appearances since being charged with sexual assault. He has already denied the allegations and said that he will prove his innocence in court.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News’ Jeff Fernando and other reporters, Belleza said he is able to cope with the brunt of the controversy thanks to fans’ and family’s support.

“Nandiyan lang po sila sa likod ko nakasuporta. Kahit anong mangyari pala, nandiyan sila palagi sa akin,” he said.

He added that one lesson he learned from the ordeal is to be careful with the people he chooses to trust.

He also said that he cannot give an update on the case, as advised by his lawyers.

A sexual-assault case was filed against Belleza at a Cebu City court in July. He spent three days under police custody before posting bail. The recommended bail was at P120,000.

Belleza, a rice farmer from Negros Occidental, was named the first grand champion of the rebooted “Tawag ng Tanghalan,” which airs as part of “It’s Showtime,” last March.

His performance Thursday afternoon was part of the 80th anniversary of the AFP Medical Center. The show included “Wildflower” stars Maja Salvador, Joseph Marco, RK Bagatsing and Vin Abrenica, among others.
