MANILA, Philippines – Alaska’s star forward Calvin Abueva offered a few words of advice to the Philippine 3×3 team that will compete in the 2017 FIBA 3×3 World Championships in Nantes, France, this weekend.
The rugged forward was part of the Manila North team that competed in the 2015 FIBA 3×3 World Tour, along with Alaska teammate Vic Manuel, Troy Rosario and Karl Dehesa. They advanced to the quarterfinals, but lost to eventual champions NoviSad.
“Hindi rin basta-basta (ang 3×3),” Abueva said Wednesday in a press conference at Crowne Plaza. “More mental ang gagawin mo dito, hindi lang laro-laro.”
“Ang sugggestion ko lang is focus lang, at gawin niyo ang best niyo,” he added. “Hindi rin biro ang makakalaban nila – malalaki at international pa. ‘Di lang Asia, world talaga.”
Representing the Philippines in the 2017 FIBA 3×3 World Cup are Kiefer Ravena, Jeron Teng, JR Quinahan, and Kobe Paras.
Abueva stressed upon them the importance of teamwork, especially in a 3×3 setting.
“Sana huwag niyo kalimutan na hindi individual ang gagawin niyo, kundi team kayo,” he said.
Abueva remains one of the country’s top options for future 3×3 tournaments.
According to Eric Altamirano, who helped the national team prepare over the past month, Abueva, Manuel, Rosario, and Terrence Romeo were their original choices for the national team, but they could not make it due to their commitments to their PBA teams.
