Mega Builders team captain Francis Saura dropped a game-high 24 points in an upset win over Philippine Army.

Philippine Air Force gave newcomer Gamboa Coffee Mix a rude welcome Saturday as the Jet Spikers blasted the Spikers, 25-19, 25-10, 28-26, in the opening day of the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Veteran Edwin Tolentino and Nino Jeruz scored 12 points each to lead Air Force, the Reinforced Conference runner up.

Tolentino had an all-around scoring performance, hitting eight attacks and coupled with two kill blocks and a pair of aces while Cruz wreaked havoc at the net with four of his points coming off the Jet Spikers’ 10 kill blocks.

Jeffrey Malabanan and Reinforced Conference Most Valuable Player Ranran Abdilla finished with 11 markers each for Air Force.

Mark Egan had 10 points for the Spikers, composed mostly of Mapua players.

Meanwhile, rookie team Mega Builders recovered from a 1-2 match deficit to pull off an upset over seasoned squad Philippine Army, 25-22, 19-25, 23-25, 25-22, 20-18, in the second game.

Skipper Francis Saura and Madzlan Gampong led the Volley Volts’ charge with 24 and 21 points, respectively.

Fauzi Ismail added 18 markers for the National University-backed Mega Builders, which played sans young guns Bryan Bagunas and James Natividad.

“Dalawa wala sa amin, nasa beach volley,” said assistant coach Dong dela Cruz. “Mas gaganda kapag dumating na ‘yung dalawa kasi madagdagan ‘yung pumupuntos sa amin.”

The Troopers, who took the Reinforced Conference third place trophy, failed to capitalize on their 2-1 match lead and lost steam in the closing stretch of the deciding frame to surrender their opening day outing.

Romnick Rico finished with 18 points while Manuel Medina and Jayvee Sumagaysay scored 16 and 10 makers, respectively, for Army.
