UST captain Lee: ‘Thank you Lord na binigay mo yung hinihiling kong isa’

A WIN IS A WIN. Marvin Lee and UST will now celebrate their first UAAP win in 393 days.

Before today, Saturday, 393 days have passed since University of Sto. Tomas last won in the UAAP

The Tigers clawed National University, 70-69, on October 15, 2016.

Since then, they have lost 17 games in a row.

Looking back at that luckless run, unprecedented in the history of one of the league’s winningest schools, team captain Marvin Lee remained in disbelief. “’Di pa rin ako makapaniwalang ganoon yung nangyari sa amin. Hanggang ngayon, ‘di ako makapaniwala sa sarili ko,” he said.

That mentality is what the boys from Espana brought to their last chance at a win in Season 80. “Dito sa game na ‘to, iniisip ko na parang last game na ‘to, parang championship ‘to. Sa sarili ko, yun ang sinabi ko,” he said.

Indeed, that’s exactly what Lee did, scoring six of his 11 points in the last five minutes to help UST score their first win in the season – and in over a year – on Saturday.

Of course, the captain was nothing but glad that his team avoided a winless season. “Siyempre, para sakin, masarap yung feeling na nanalo. Sabi nga, parang nag-champion na kami,” he said.

He then continued, “Thank you Lord na binigay mo sakin yung hinihiling kong isa. Hiniling ko kasi na sanang wag kaming mag-0-14.”

Also, Lee was grateful for the Tiger faithful who made their presence felt, even though their team was once formerly winless. “Thankful pa rin ako sa mga taong nagpunta rito kasi nung nagchi-cheer na sila, na-boost up ako lalo. Feeling ko, may katulong ako sa likod ko, ‘di ako papabayaan.”

And though they find themselves at the bottom of the standings for the first time in a long while, the third-year guard said all of this is just part of the process. “Sabi nga ni coach, rebuilding process ‘to so yung mga nangyari sa amin, magiging aral samin, magiging inspiration namin para next season,” he said.
