Makati Congressman Monsour del Rosario brought up a list of items he believes sports bodies need to focus on to produce a good showing in the locally-hosted Southeast Asian Games.
“Our athletes will need the proper competition venues, training facilities, nutrition, foreign training and extensive foreign exposure if we want them to do well in the 2019 SEA Games,” the former Olympian said during a ceremony at PhilSports Arena in Pasig city feting the Filipino medalists in the recent Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, and the ASEAN Para Games.
“Our neighbors in Southeast Asia spent in building excellent facilities, especially competition venues. We should also do the same so we can make our country proud when other nations come over to compete here two years from now,” added del Rosario, appointed by the Philippine Olympic Committee as the country’s chef de mission for the 2019 SEA Games.
The Philippines last hosted the SEA Games in 2005, collecting a national-record 113 gold, 84 silver and 94 bronze medals to bag the overall title.
Del Rosario said he isn’t offering any medal predictions.
“Things were different and the people we had were different 12 years ago so I cannot make guarantees about winning the overall title,” the former Olympian said, adding that other members of the House have offered to help the national athletes prepare for the SEA Games.
