There’s now a university degree that’ll help you be the next internet sensation—in Shanghai, China, that is.
Yiwu Industrial and Commercial College (YWICC) is now offering a college course on “Modelling and Etiquette,” which includes classes about “Make-up Modelling,” “Public Relations Etiquette,” “Merchandise Display,” “Aesthetic Cultivation,” and everything it takes to become an internet celebrity.
The degree also teaches things like properly using a selfie stick, performing in front of the camera, dressing fashionably, knowing luxurious brands, and blowing kisses into the smartphone.
Students who’ll complete the required classes will receive the diploma after three years.
Upon graduating, they now have the chance to be their country’s next internet sensation, known as wanghong, or “hot on the web” in English.
A wanghong usually live streams his day to day activities and earn digital monetary gifts from fans and sponsors.
According to a Business Insider report, “Chinese millennials who are into the wanghong industry, are using smart phones to stream their lives and are experiencing a lucrative effect because it’s apparently a billion-dollar career.”
“With 731 million internet users, 95% of whom are mobile users, China has a significantly larger online market than the US does. So while YouTube icons like PewDiePie — who fell from grace earlier this year for making anti-Semitic jokes — can make $15 million here, wanghong in China rake in over 300 million yuan, or $46 million a year,” the report says.
Internet consultancy Analysys International estimated China’s wanghong industry was worth 53 billion yuan ($7.7 billion) last year, and would double by 2018.
