Knowing their voices would mesh together perfectly despite having contrasting personalities, Bamboo Mañalac put together Jem Macatuno and Jouie Anne Reyes for the battles rounds of “The Voice Teens.”

It’s a cunning way to ensure that one of the two promising singers would move on to the knockout rounds, although Bamboo must have imagined the process of picking between them to be much easier.

Macatuno, of course, is the more seasoned of the pair, having been in a band before joining. He is also more charming, while Reyes is the shy, private type that still needs to let loose a little more if she wants to win over some fans.

But Reyes surprised everyone when she brought to the stage her A-game alongside her partner as they delivered a powerful mashup of Bamboo’s “Masaya” and Yeng Constantino’s “Pag-Ibig.”

Speaking to Reyes, Bamboo said: “Lahat nagsasabi sa akin na mahiyain na bata ito. My goal was to open you up. Pinersonal ko iyon and I think the credit goes to Jem. Iyong chemistry, iyong binabato niyang energy sa iyo, binabalik mo sa kanya. It’s growth, so maraming salamat sa inyo.”

However, Reyes’ massive improvement aside, Bamboo opted to keep Macatuno. The teen from San Fernando, Pampanga will be moving on to the next round, while Reyes was eliminated.

Reyes posted on Twitter afterward: “Coach Bamboo just said na, ‘Once a Kamp Kawayan, always a Kamp Kawayan.’ I’ll never forget this moment.”
