Team Lakay knockout artist Kevin Belingon cemented his spot as the top bantamweight contender after defeating South Korean Kevin Chung via unanimous decision at ONE Championship: Legends of the World, Friday evening at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Belingon was the aggressor in the first round unloading an array of punches and kicks and had Chung in danger late, getting a knockdown and nearly getting the finish.
Chung took advantage of a slowed down Belingon in the second round, getting a takedown and keeping the Pinoy down for a bit.
Belingon eventually escaped and got back to his feet.
In the final round, Chung managed to get an early takedown and threatened the Baguio City native with a deep straight armbar attempt.
Showing off his improved submission defense, Belingon escaped and again managed to get the fight back to the feet.
Towards the closing moments of the bout, Belingon scored another knockdown and again looked to end the fight, but Chung was able to survive.
After three rounds, Belingon did enough to earn the judges’ nod.
Belingon improves to 17-5 while picking up four straight wins, and could likely be the next challenger for Bibiano Fernandes’ bantamweight belt.
