BAGUIO CITY — While waiting for the court decision on their appeal, supporters of Vice President Leni Robredo were able to complete the P7.4 million payment for the remaining balance of her protest fee.
A group called Piso Para sa Laban ni Leni was able to raise the amount through donations from 25,000 Filipinos across the country.
“We are ready to pay the Presidential Electoral Tribunal,” said Museo Pambata founder Cristina Lim-Yuson, one of the proponents of the fundraising campaign.
As of August 30, the amount raised was P7,442,859.34 almost two months after the launch of the campaign.
The money is more than enough to cover the second installment of Robredo’s cash deposit for her counter protest against former Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Members of the Piso Para sa Laban ni Leni had completed the P7.4 million, pending the PET’s decision on its motion for reconsideration of an earlier order.
The Supreme Court, sitting as PET, rejected the petition of Robredo’s supporters to help pay the remaining fee for the election protest.
Robredo’ s supporters sought for the reversal of the PET’s resolution.
They insisted on their right to guard and protect their votes for the Vice President by way of paying her counter protest fee.
“A vice president who won will be deprived of her victory if those who voted for her will not help her protect her victory,” said Lim-Yuson.
Aside from Lim-Yuson, the other members of the online movement are former PAG-Ibig Fund Chief Executive Officer Zorayda Amelia Alonzo, former human rights commissioner Paulynn Sicam, award-winning singer Celeste Legaspi-Gallardo, Ateneo de Manila University Press director Karina Bolasco, and former Social Welfare Secretary Corazon Soliman.
