MANILA, Philippines – Sta. Lucia stormed back from a sluggish start and unleashed a strong finishing kick to escape with a thrilling 23-25, 22-25, 25-12, 25-23, 15-7 victory over Cocolife in the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Imports Bohdana Anisova and Marisa Field rediscovered their rhythm in time to help the Lady Realtors, who were unstoppable in the crucial stretch of the game.
With the victory, the Lady Realtors snapped a two-game skid and improved to 2-5. Their record puts them in good position to avoid a quarterfinals showdown with the top seed.
Sta. Lucia coach Jerry Yee said his team is determined to improve its record and hopefully gain some momentum heading into the sudden-death quarterfinals.
“The way our tournament is formatted, laging may chance pa tayo kahit nasa baba ng standings,” he said.
Anisova erupted for 29 kills, four aces and two blocks to finish with a game-high 35 points while Field chipped in 20 points for the Lady Realtors.
A prized recruit from Ukraine, Anisova was impressive in the crucial stretch of the deciding set where the Lady Realtors turned a 7-5 lead into a 13-6 advantage.
Tai Manu-Olevao tried to pump life into the Asset Managers with a powerful kill from the backrow, but Anisova connected on a beautiful placed shot before Field and Pam Lastimosa thwarted the attack of Nene Bautista to seal the victory.
Manu-Olevao had 30 kills while fellow import Taylor Milton and Nene Bautista delivered 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the Asset Managers, who joined Cignal and Generika-Ayala at the fourth spot with a 3-4 card.
