MANILA — Ten is a big number for PLDT’s Gabay Guro project, as it celebrates a decade of honoring the hard work and dedication of the country’s beloved teachers.
Nearly 20,000 teachers from both public and private schools will be treated to a grand tribute on Sunday at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena.
Top-notch entertainment featuring the country’s leading artists will headline the celebration. Broadway star Lea Salonga, fresh from Hawaii where she performed in a benefit concert for childhood literacy, leads the bevy of stellar names who will entertain the teachers.
Concert artists Martin Nievera and Gary Valenciano will also share their talents onstage, as well as Sarah Geronimo, Jaya, husband and wife Ogie Alcasid and Regine Velasquez, Jona Viray, Michael Pangilinan, Southborder, Jay-R, Luke Mejares, Jinky Vidal and Medwin Marfil.
Velasquez recorded the Gabay Guro theme, “Believing in Me,” penned by the husband and wife tandem of Raul and Cacai Mitra. The song mirrors every person’s heart of gratefulness for their unsung heroes in the classrooms, the teachers.
Adding glitter to this year’s celebration are Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, actress Marian Rivera, concert queen Pops Fernandez and beauty queen MJ Lastimosa, with Andrew Wolfe, the UP Pep Squad and the G-Force.
“We’ve paid tribute to the teachers every year since Gabay Guro started,” said brand advocacy head Gary Dujali. “On its 10th anniversary, Gabay Guro should honor these teachers all the more to make them stand a little taller.”
Guest artists Robin Padilla, Jericho Rosales, Derek Ramsay, Anne Curtis and Gabby Concepcion are set to delight the teachers and bring smiles with their mere presence.
The cast of the teleseryes “The Promise of Forever” (Paulo Avelino, Ejay Falcon and Ritz Azul) and the young actors in “The Good Son” (Joshua Garcia, Nash Aguas, McCoy de Leon and Jerome Ponce) will definitely bring shrieks and screams to the crowd.
OPM icons Celeste Legaspi and Basil Valdez were also tapped to serenade 10 outstanding teachers who will share their exceptional stories with everybody that day.
Aside from entertainment, big prizes are in store that can change the lives of the teachers. To be raffled off house and lot, vehicles, livelihood opportunities, gadgets, cash prizes and many more.
“Every year, we really look forward to this event because this is our way to reward our many teachers for their valuable presence in the lives of students, recognize and appreciate their selfless work,” said Gabay Guro Foundation chairman and PLDT senior vice-president Chaye Cabal-Revilla.
“This is truly a grand way of celebrating a decade of dedication and a lifetime of thank you from everyone who make up the core team Gabay Guro.”
Ten years ago, a group of PLDT executives banded together simply over coffee to start the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for school teachers. With a common dream of being a catalyst for change, Gabay Guro became the education arm and an annual flagship project of the PLDT-Smart Foundation.
To date, Gabay Guro has over 1,200 scholars in 52 partner state colleges and universities nationwide. It has also partnered with local government units to further teacher education.
