A woman lawmaker is seeking the creation of an elderly care and nursing facility for senior citizens nationwide.
Senior Citizens partylist Rep. Milagros Aquino-Magsaysay filed House Bill 6567 calling for the establishment of a care and nursing center for elderly in all cities and municipalities.
“The reality is that there are Filipino families who cannot take care of, provide for, and take charge of their senior citizen-relatives. Through this bill, now, they have an option on where they can place their relatives where they will be cared for and be provided an opportunity to socialize with their fellow senior citizens in their communities, ” she said.
She laments that nowadays, many families, especially among those poor, have a difficult time in making ends meet for their family, much less take care of an ailing elderly family-member.
“There are certain times that these neglected and abandoned senior citizens are found in the streets, begging for food and shelter. There are certain instances that poor families see their senior citizens as a great burden, financially and emotionally, ” Magsaysay said.
“These centers will give these senior citizens a sense of dignity and belongingness and give them the necessary care and support they deserve, ” she said.
House Bill 6567, the proposed National Senior Citizens Care and Nursing Home Act, mandates the establishment of a senior citizens care and nursing center in all cities and municipalities.
It tasks the Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to formulate the rules and regulations, procedures and guidelines to be followed in admitting senior citizens to the center.
The bill seeks an initial allocation of P1 billion for the construction of the centers and purchase of equipment.
