The Sandiganbayan Third Division has allowed former Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin “Junjun” Binay to travel to California, New York and Washington with his children from June 8 to 30, 2017 as a treat during their summer vacation.
The court allowed him to go, provided that he maintain his P608,000 travel bond, which he posted before the court on August 11, 2016.
Binay was charged back in February 2016 with two counts of graft and six counts of falsification of public documents in connection with the overpriced P2.2-billion Makati City Hall Parking Building (MCHP) contracts.
He was supposed to go on a spiritual pilgrimage with his parents and other family members in May, but he backed out in order to care for his children. He later filed a different travel motion hoping to go to the US after “all his children successfully hurdled the 2016-2017 school year.”
As a single parent to four minor children, Binay said in his travel motion that his personal presence during the trip will “foster the confidence, love, trust, responsibility, and belongingness of his children to the family and hone their holistic growth, development and well-roundedness in society.”
Binay has provided the court with details of his flight and itinerary, hoping to get a better response for his travel motion. The court said Binay should stick to his itinerary, and he should appear before the court within five days of his return and provide the court with photocopies of his trip.
