MANILA – San Juan City Mayor Guia Gomez on Thursday rejected the looming recall elections in her city and vowed to challenge the move legally.
Gomez in a press conference said the petition for another elections for mayor filed by supporters of former San Juan Vice Mayor Francis Zamora does not represent the “true will” of the people of San Juan.
She asserted that she would only step down at the end of her term in 2019.

“[The] recall petition castrated by Francis Zamora, is not the true will of the people of San Juan. It is the project of their machinations. I will not allow myself to fall in his ill motives,” she told reporters.
“I will not accept this recall and will allow my lawyers to challenge it legally and according to the right process,” she added in a rare press conference.
The Commission on Elections last month approved the petition seeking a fresh mayoral race between Zamora and Gomez. Over 30,000 San Juan residents signed the petition.
In a previous interview with ANC, Zamora, son of San Juan City Rep. Ronaldo Zamora, said the petition reflects the clamor for change among citizens of San Juan and denied that he seeks to establish his own dynasty in the city.
“If I’m given a chance to become mayor, all I want to do is serve my 3 terms if that indeed happens. If I will be asked if I am intending to build a dynasty of my own, definitely not,” he said.
Gomez, the mother of Sen. JV Ejercito, also reminded the Zamora clan of long-standing political ties between their families, citing how she had backed the congressional bid of the elder Zamora, who was former President Joseph Estrada’s Executive Secretary.
“Kami po ba ang inggrato gaya ng paratang nila (Are we really ingrates as they had accused)? For 30 years, I have worked for Congressman Zamora and he knows that. In fact, many times he would say he owes it to the Estradas ang kaniyang pagka-congressman,” she said.
“And many times he would say he owes it even more to me who would wake up 2 o’clock in the morning, 3 o’clock in the morning just to make katok (knock), make pakiusap na iboto po ninyo ang isang (plead that you vote for) Ronnie Zamora kasi magaling ‘yan (he is great), iyan ay (he is a) bar topnotcher,” she added.
