MANILA, Philippines – After suffering their first loss of the NCAA season, the defending champions San Beda Red Lions bounced back in a big way by crushing College of St. Benilde, 76-52, on Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Coming off a heartbreaking defeat to Lyceum last Friday, the Red Lions showed no mercy against the young Blazers to improve to 2-1 in the NCAA Season 93 men’s basketball tournament. Their 24-point rout marks the biggest margin of victory so far in the season.
Javee Mocon led all scorers with 12 points, while Robert Bolick was impressive anew for San Beda as he scored nine points on top of 11 rebounds, six assists, and two steals.
The Red Lions managed only a 16-15 advantage at the end of the opening frame, with Kendix Belgica’s eight points sparking the Blazers to a strong start.
However, Bolick’s entry changed the complexion of the game, and the 6-foot-1 guard teamed up with Mocon and sharpshooter AC Soberano to help the Red Lions pull away for good. Soberano knocked down three triples in the second quarter, and San Beda outscored St. Benilde 21-9 to break the game wide open, 37-24, at the half.
Though the Blazers managed to put up 20 points in the third quarter, they could not make stops on the other end. St. Benilde would not threaten again in the second half as San Beda went on to lead by as much as 29 points, 76-47, off a three-pointer by big man Kenmark Cariño with two minutes to go.
San Beda connected on 45.76% of their attempts, while limiting St. Benilde to only 34.55% shooting. The Red Lions did commit 21 turnovers, but the Blazers were unable to take advantage as they scored only 12 points off those miscues.
Moreover, San Beda forced the Blazers to throw the ball away 26 times, scoring 24 points from those errors.
St. Benilde dropped to 1-2 in the tournament.
