GAINING STEAM. San Beda has back-to-back wins heading into a champion versus champion showdown against DLSU on Sunday.
San Beda College wanted all the momentum it could get heading into the most anticipated matchup thus far in the 2017 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament.
The Red Lions got just that in Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre as they made quick work of still luckless University of the East, 68-55.
NCAA Finals MVP Arnaud Noah was a force down low with 16 points and eight rebounds, but it was the NCAA champions’ depth which again proved key in their second straight win to start the tournament. “From my 25 pooled players kasi talaga, yung mag-show up dito, yun yung magiging part sa NCAA,” coach Boyet Fernandez said.
Backing up Noah was Javee Mocon who posted a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double. And proving their superior depth, a total of 14 players contributed in the scoring column for Fernandez.
Next up for still spotless San Beda is UAAP champion De La Salle University on Sunday. “Sana tuloy-tuloy pa ‘to because we’re playing against La Salle,” Fernandez said.
But before that, the Red Lions took care of business in this one, mostly courtesy of a 26-7 second quarter.
However, the Red Warriors were able to pull within four in the middle of the third.
It was at that point that San Beda pulled out the quick counter and put the game away with a 10-2 run for a 50-38 lead entering the final frame. “Credit to the boys kasi yung mentality nila, yun yung nagpanalo,” Fernandez said.
Alvin Pasaol paced UE with 19 points and six rebounds. Unable to keep up with the depth of their opponents, however, they fell to 2-4.
