JEEPERS SWEEPERS. Robert Bolick and San Beda are still on track for an undefeated preseason.
San Beda College remains in the running to do in the 2017 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament something which has only been done two times before.
Robert Bolick was all over the floor once more and kept the Red Lions in position for a tournament sweep as they upended Ateneo de Manila University, 82-67, on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Behind their main man whose star just keeps on shining brighter, the NCAA champions scored their eighth win in as many games in the preliminary round. “Credit to the boys because they really stepped up. They really played to win today,” head coach Boyet Fernandez said.
Now, Fernandez and company are only three games away from an undefeated run – a feat that had only been accomplished by National University in 2012 and De La Salle University in 2016.
Much of it was thanks to Bolick who wound up with 23 points on 75 percent shooting to go along with five rebounds and four assists.
It was also the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup MVP who steered San Beda to a strong start, 21-10, after the first quarter.
The double-digit advantage grew to as much as 22, 53-31, in the third quarter before the Blue Eagles battled back to as close as 62-69 inside the last four minutes.
Bolick was once again there to thwart them, however, and spearheaded the Red Lions’ 13-5 run to close out the contest.
Javee Mocon contributed nine points and 12 rebounds for the undefeated boys from Mendiola.
Along with keeping itself on the hunt for history, San Beda also dealt a fatal blow to the quarterfinals hopes of the Blue Eagles.
The loss, coupled with their upset at the hands of University of Perpetual Help last Wednesday, dropped Ateneo to a 4-4 standing – on the outside looking into the playoff picture.
The fourth and final quarterfinals berth will instead go to the 5-3 Green Archers who, at one point, did not have their fate in their hands.
Group A fourth-seed DLSU will face off against Group B top-seed Far Eastern University while Group A top-seed San Beda will meet Group B fourth-seed University of the Philippines in the quarterfinals which commence on Wednesday still at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Also, Group B second-seed Adamson University battles Group A third-seed Jose Rizal University and Group A second-seed Lyceum of the Philippines University duels Group B third-seed San Sebastian College-Recoletos.
Raffy Verano had 12 points to top the scoring column in Ateneo’s last game in the preseason tournament.
