Quiet in the first three games of the NCAA 93 Men’s Basketball Tournament, both Jomari Presbitero and Davon Potts busted out at last for San Beda College.
Presbitero poured in a career-best 16 points while Potts fired all but three of his nine points in the decisive third quarter run that eventually ended as an 81-69 win for the Red Lions against Emilio Aguinaldo College on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
With all the attention on Robert Bolick and Javee Mocon, Potts and Presbitero proved that the defending champions remain as deep and as balanced as ever.
“Yun ang maganda sa team namin. We’re not selfish and we don’t think about our individual performance,” team captain Presbitero expressed post-game.
Nonetheless, Bolick had 10 points, nine rebounds, and five assists while Mocon posted 10 markers and four boards as San Beda scored back-to-back wins and its third win overall in four games.
It took until the third quarter, though, for the Red Lions to break this one wide open.
There, Potts lit up the 17-3 blast that turned a six-point margin into the biggest lead of the game at 20, 55-35, at the three-minute mark of the third.
The Generals then battled back to as close as 62-72 inside the last three minutes, but were turned back by seven unanswered points for San Beda. “Even if it’s an ugly win, it’s a win so we’ll take it,” head coach Boyet Fernandez said.
With the convincing victory, the defending champions are all ready for their rivalry game with Colegio de San Juan de Letran on Tuesday.
And then, Fernandez knows full well that they can’t start slow once more. “I hope this will not happen again in our next game. Letran’s a very good team so we have to play our game from start to finish,” he said.
On the other hand, EAC lost for the second time in a row following a season-opening win.
Francis Munsayac scored 21 points to lead their effort before exiting the game with an apparent foot injury. Jerome Garcia also added 16 markers.
Cameroonian Hamadou Laminou struggled anew and only had 13 points and nine rebounds all while missing 14 of his 18 shots.
