The 1991 jersey worn by Robert Jaworski and co. during their epic 1-3 Finals comeback against Formula Shell. The current Gin Kings rocked a jersey inspired by this one for retro night against the Meralco Bolts.
In a rare occurence by PBA standards, Brgy. Ginebra went retro by rocking uniforms inspired by the 1991 Gin Kings led by the Living Legend Robert Jaworski.
That team won the PBA First Conference championship by erasing a 1-3 finals deficit.
The current Ginebra team, inspired by the one that came 26 years before, kept the Never Say Die attitude alive by scoring a pulsating 90-89 win over Meralco for retro Sunday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
“It’s fun. I like the fact that were honoring Jaworski and his troop,” head coach Tim Cone said on his team taking it all the way back to 1991.
“You know, there’s marketing possibilities out of this, the NBA does it as well. But for me, it’s important for the fans to remember the history of the league and remember those that came before us,” he added.
More than simply honoring the greats of the past, Cone says something as simple as rocking a retro jersey can pique someone’s curiosity, especially the younger fans.
And for a team like Ginebra that has legions upon legions of fans that are young and old, big and small, and everything in between, history lessons by way of retro jerseys almost makes too much sense.
“By wearing an older jersey, the retro jersey, the young kids, they ask, ‘What was that all about?’ And they hear about Jaworski and all those guys, Bal David and Marlou and all those guys. It’s always great when we recognize the people before us,” Cone said.
“That’s why I like these ideas, these retro jerseys. Hopefully we’ll go at it again, I think we have a couple more to wear, but we’ll pick the right times, I hope, to wear ’em,” he added.
Aside from the 1991 jersey, Ginebra does have some more retro jerseys to choose from that are part of the Ganado Classics the team launched recently.
The collection includes the current jersey design the Gin Kings wear and the 1991 version. The original from 1985 and the 1996 version rocked by the likes of David is also part of it.
Also, the Mark Caguioa-era jersey, a favorite among fans, is included. Because it’s a travesty if it’s not right?
