The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) appealed to motorists to respect traffic enforcers manning the roads after its men were attacked by a furious public utility driver and conductor over their traffic violation.

Jojo Garcia, MMDA chairman Danilo Lim’s chief of staff, said traffic enforcers, who are staying under the heat of the sun and rain to do their job well, deserve respect.

“These men (traffic enforcers) are in uniform, are just fulfilling orders of MMDA chairman Danilo Lim to remove obstructions on the road that cause heavy traffic,” said Garcia.

Garcia made the appeal after traffic enforcers Roberto Supan, Francisco Apostol and Abanil were assaulted by driver Eddie Mangangcong Jr., 36, at the corner of Edsa and P. Tuazon, Cubao Quezon City on Monday.

Supan apprehended Mangangcong, a driver of Metro Star bus for unloading passenger on nondesignated stop and ordered him to surrender his driver’s license.

Instead of complying, Mangangcong and conductor Kim Lester Padilla alighted their bus and gave blow of punches to the traffic enforcer. Apostol and Abanil tried to pacify the attackers but were also mauled.

The suspects got on the bus and locked in themselves while enforcers sought police’s assistance, resulting in their arrest. Supan was hospitalized due to minor injuries he sustained.

Garcia said direct assault upon an agent of person in authority was filed against Manangcong and Padilla, who are now behind bars at Quezon City Police.

Garcia said they have also asked the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board to sanction Mangangcong.

Upon the orders of Lim, Garcia said they will support hurt enforcers in pursuing charges against the suspects, who apologized for their wrongdoing.

“Traffic enforcers should be spared from any harm because they are just implementing traffic regulations,” said Garcia.

Earlier, Lim assured traffic enforcers that he would stand by them if they would perform their duties properly.

However, he also vowed crack a whip against traffic enforcers who get involved in wrongdoing.

Lim also urged traffic and environmental personnel to be more courteous, instead of rudeness, in dealing with violators of traffic rules and other enforced regulations.
