San Beda College returned to its winning ways at the expense of a struggling College of St. Benilde side, 25-21, 25-20, 17-25, 25-22, Wednesday in Group B of the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The Lady Red Spikers improved to 2-1 win-loss record tied with Arellano University, which handed SBC a straight sets defeat last week, and kept the Lady Blazers winless in two outings.

Cesca Racraquin unleashed 12 attacks, two service aces and a kill block in a 15-point showing while adding 22 digs and 16 excellent receptions for the Mendiola-based squad, which avenged its loss to the Lady Blazers in the stepladder semifinals last NCAA Season 92.

“Malaking bagay para sa amin (ang panalo) kasi sila ang No. 3 (sa NCAA) so natapatan namin sila,” said SBC coach Nemesio Gavino Jr. “Magandang motivation para sa amin na nakita namin na may chance na talunin namin talaga sila (sa NCAA).”

Nieza Viray added 12 markers while Satriani Espiritu and Trisha Paras combined for 16 markers for the Lady Red Spikers, who will take on UAAP team University of the Philippines on Sept. 23.

SBC went up 23-19 in the fourth set after CSB committed back-to-back errors. Ranya Musa tried to keep the Lady Blazers alive, 21-23, on a kill block and saved a match point, 22-24, on a quick attack before the Lady Red Spikers sealed the victory on a checked ball.

The Lady Red Spikers broke open an 11-11 deadlock in the opening set with seven straight points only to see the Lady Blazers close the gap, 22-21. SBC stopped the run in the next play before walking away with the first set after CSB committed two straight errors.

It was the same story in the second frame with the Lady Red Spikers needing to stave off the repeated comeback attempts of CSB. The NCAA Season 91 champion Lady Blazers regrouped in the third set to avoid a sweep.

Musa scored 21 points in a lost cause while Maritess Pablo had 12 for CSB, which gave away an atrocious 37 points off errors.
