MANILA — Bali Pure was coasting to a sweep before Adamson University put up a fight on Wednesday at the FIloil Flying V Centre.

In the end, however, the Water Defenders just had much more poise than their younger opponents.

Jerrili Malabanan and Grethcel Soltones scored 16 and 14 points, respectively, as Bali Pure took down the Lady Falcons in four sets, 15-18, 25-23, 19-25, and 25-20, to boost its bid for the semifinals in the 2017 Premier Volleyball League Open Conference.

It wasn’t by their hands that the Water Defenders got the much-needed win. Instead, it was two errors from their opponents that ultimately allowed them to get back on track in the tournament.

Nonetheless, they’re taking the win, as well as the improvement to a 3-3 standing.

“Siyempre, masaya pa rin kami sa panalo,” a relieved head coach Roger Gorayeb said post-game.

Gorayeb’s wards got into their groove right from first serve and easily earned the first two sets.

Jema Galanza came alive in the third, however, and took the set for Adamson. “Nangyari na naman ‘yung nangyari before – third set, talo na naman. Buti nakahabol pa rin kami,” Gorayeb said.

The two teams were still going back and forth in the fourth frame and Bali Pure was only up, 23-19, before Chiara Permentilla’s attack error and Eli Soyud’s service error ended the match.

Risa Sato contributed 10 points, three off blocks, for the Water Defenders, while Jasmine Nabor also added eight points on top of 32 excellent sets.

The win was much welcome for Gorayeb’s girls who suffered a painful defeat to BanKo-Perlas last Saturday.

Now, the Water Defenders and the Perlas Spikers are on even ground for fourth-place with similar slates.

“Kailangan naming umayos kung gusto naming umabot ng top four,” Gorayeb said, continuing his urging for better play from his team.

Conversely, the decision dragged down Adamson into a 1-5 standing – putting them out of the running for the next round.

This, despite the best efforts of Galanza who wound up with 18 points.
