“Gangnam Style,” the 2012 viral hit song that catapulted Korean rapper Psy to worldwide fame, has reached another milestone by garnering 3 billion views on YouTube.

The music video hit 3 billion views over the weekend, according to YG Entertainment.

“#GANGNAMSTYLE got 3 billion views!! THX,” Psy tweeted to celebrate the achievement.

Psy released the album “Psy 6 (Six Rules), Part 1” with “Gangnam Style” as the carrier single. The song’s music video was uploaded on YouTube on July 15, 2012.

“Gangnam Style” became viral because of the horse-riding dance and celebrities worldwide took notice.

In September 2012, Guinness World Records declared the song as the most liked video in YouTube history with 2.14 million and it reached 100 million views the same month.

It reached 500 million views in October 2012 and on December 21, 2012, it garnered another Guinness World Record when it reached 1 billion views, becoming the first video to reach the milestone on YouTube and just 159 days after its upload.

Psy was signed up under Schoolboy Records for his US career and he made appearances in concerts in TV shows.

He went to the MTV Video Music Awards and on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show,” he taught DeGeneres and Brienty Spears the horse-riding dance. Psy also guested on the “Today” and “The View” shows.
The song debuted at No. 64 on Billboard Hot 100 and climbed to No. 2 in October 2012 and stayed there for weeks.

Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced in 2012 that Psy would be given the Order of Cultural Merit for his contribution to spreading hallyu or Korean Wave.

Psy sang “Gangnam Style” with Madonna at her New York City concert in November 2012 and also at the American Music Awards.

In December 2012, he performed at TNT’s “Christmas in Washington” which was attended by then US President Barack Obama and his family.

“Gangnam Style” sold 9.7 million copies in 2012, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), to become the third bestselling single in the world that year.

On May 31, 2014, “Gangnam Style” reached another first by clocking in 2 billion views on YouTube or 527 days since its upload.

Last July, Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again feat. Charlie Puth” dethroned “Gangnam Style” as the most viewed video on YouTube.

As of today, Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito feat. Daddy Yankee” is the most viewed YouTube video with 4.4 billion followed by “See You Again feat. Charlie Puth” with 3.23 billion and “Gangnam Style” with 3 billion.
