It’s a big victory for the Philippines as representative Karen Ibasco was crowned Miss Earth 2017 Saturday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Karen bested 80 other beauty queens from different countries. She is the country’s fourth titleholder after Karla Henry in 2008, Jamie Herrell in 2014, and Angelia Ong in 2015.
The physicist beauty queen impressed the crowd and the judges during the final question and answer portion. Asked who or what is the biggest enemy of the Mother Earth, “I believe that the real problem in this world is not climate change. The real problem is us because of our ignorance and apathy. What we have to do is to start changing our ways, to start recalibrating our minds and redirecting our steps. Because together as a global community, our micro-efforts will have a macro effect to help save our home and our planet.”
On her profile on the Miss Earth website, Karen shared her advocacy is conservation of energy. She wanted to be crowned as Miss Earth to use her voice and knowledge in helping save the planet Earth.
“I understand the importance of daily consumption of energy that is why my environmental advocacy is the conservation of energy and to embrace renewable and sustainable sources of energy in exchange for fossil fuel, which contributes to a huge percentage in global warming,” she said.
Karen was crowned by Miss Earth 2016 Katherine Espin of Ecuador. Other winning beauty queens were Miss Australia Nina Robertson, who is also part-Filipino, as Miss Earth Air 2017, Miss Colombia Juliana Franco as Miss Earth Water 2017, and Miss Russia Lada Akimova as Miss Earth Fire 2017.
