It’s a back-to-back win for Philippines after representatives Cristiani Rebada and Nhikzy Calma were proclaimed as grand champions at the 21st World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA).

Cristiani bagged the Senior Grand Champion Performer of the World while Nhikzy took home the Junior Grand Champion Performer of the World title. Hannah Korin Dimaano Castillo, on the other hand, emerged as Junior Grand Champion Vocalist of the World. In 2016, dance group Junior New System won as Senior Grand Champion Performers of the World.

Nhikzy, who also won in the “Mini-Me” segment of “It’s Showtime,” impressed the judges with his dance performance of Michael Jackson’s song medley.

The young talent thanked God, as well as singer Jed Madela, who acted as their coach and mentor. Recall that Jed rose to fame following his grand championship win at WCOPA in 2005.

As his win in the same tilt paved way for more opportunities, Jed pays it forward by supporting and mentoring the Filipino representatives. Jed previously hosted and performed at the event but chose to stay “behind the scene” this time coaching the Filipino performers.

“I am so proud of all of them. Watching quietly in the sidelines, controlling my emotions, my heart is full of pride. Seeing the smiles and hearing the laughter and cheers of Team Philippines makes me so happy. Slowly, we have built a good reputation in the performing arts scene and I pray that in the future we get more support. The Filipino talent is just so amazing,” Jed posted on his Facebook. He also updated his followers with videos and photos from WCOPA.

The prestigious event, often dubbed as “Talent Olympics,” was held from June 30 to July 9 in Long Beach, California. There were 75 judges while performers from over 50 countries were said to have participated in the competition.

According to Abby Mercado, the Philippines brought home 205 medals, 58 gold, 99 silver, 48 bronze, and 22 division plaques and 7 industry awards. Team Philippines’ National Director Gerry Mercado also won the 2017 WCOPA Superior National Director Award.
