DREAM TEAM. A team with both youth and experience is ready and raring to represent the Philippines in the 2017 FIBA 3X3 World Cup.
Still with more than a month to go before the 2017 FIBA 3X3 World Cup, the Philippine team is ready, all set, and ready to go.
JR Quinahan, Kobe Paras, Kiefer Ravena, and Jeron Teng have been getting together and getting to know each other’s games in team practices since Saturday.
And in that short span they have played with each other, they are nothing but feeling good. “I think our team is perfect for 3X3,” Paras shared with reporters in the national team’s press conference on Wednesday at the Discovery Suites in Ortigas.
He then furthered, “If you watch Jeron and Kiefer kasi, magaling mag-isolation. When I was young, I always said I look up to Jeron and Kiefer.”
Indeed, the Philippines has assembled what could be considered a dream team with a US prospect in Paras, a two-time UAAP MVP in Ravena, a multiple time champion in Teng, and a seasoned veteran in Quinahan.
“It’s really a mixture of youth and experience. Naalala ko yung nagkukwentuhan kami ni kuya JR, he had his own experience 10 to 12 years ago playing 3X3 in when he was still in Cebu,” Ravena said. “So when it comes to our experience, meron yung team. Then of course, speed will be our advantage.”
With that in mind, the Filipino representatives have set great goals for themselves. As Ravena put it, “Ang goal naman namin is to win the championship (and if not) ma-improve yung finish the last time we competed.”
In 2016, the Philippines did not advance from the preliminary stages in the FIBA 3X3 World Cup.
Now, Chooks-Pilipinas 3X3 will be facing European champions Romania and Slovenia as well as host country France and El Salvador in Group B. The tournament will run from June 17 to 21 in Nantes, France.
After propping up Gilas Pilipinas in their campaign in the 2017 SEABA Championship, Bounty and Chooks-To-Go have now turned their focus to 3X3. “We believe in the potential of 3X3 and we believe we have a good chance in 3X3. So this time, we are once again here to back up the Philippine national team,” president Ronald Mascarinas said.
