ANTIPOLO CITY — Once again, San Miguel proved to be too much for Alaska to handle.
The Beermen asserted their mastery over the Aces, taking a convincing 109-97 victory in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at Ynares Center here on Saturday.
San Miguel has won 8 straight against Alaska dating back to last season and the Beermen improved their record in the mid-season tournament to 7-2, tied with idle Ginebra for second place.
Three players posted double-doubles for the Beermen in a game that became one-sided in the second half after a close first 24 minutes.
Playing almost 40 minutes, Alex Cabagnot fired a game-high 25 points on top of 10 rebounds and six assists. Charles Rhodes was once again a dominating presence down low, going for 24 points and 10 boards.
Marcio Lassiter added 19 points for San Miguel, while Chris Ross ended up with 18 markers and 10 dimes.
“This is a very important game for us. Although I know it is a must win for Alaska, for us to get in one of the seeds in the top 2, we have to sweep our next two games. Three including this Alaska game,” head coach Leo Austria said.
“You can see it from the players na they really want to win although nung bandang huli medyo relax na relax na sila. That’s not a good habit for us because we have to finish really strong.”
Leading by only three at the break, the Beermen broke the game wide open in the third period, outscoring the Aces by 13 points before posting a 22-point lead in the fourth, 99-77.
Alaska only managed to close the gap a little bit in the end game as San Miguel took its foot off the gas.
Suffering a sixth straight loss overall, the Aces now find themselves tied with Globalport for eighth place with identical 4-6 marks.
Playing without Calvin Abueva and Jvee Casio, Alaska got 23 points and 13 rebounds from Cory Jefferson while Chris Banchero added 22 off the bench.
