Games on Thursday at Ynares Sports Arena:
3 p.m. – Wangs Basketball vs Cignal HD
5 p.m. – AMA Online Education vs CEU
MANILA, Philippines – After a nine-day breather, a well-rested Cignal HD crew looks to continue its ascent in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup as it springs back to action against Wangs Basketball on Thursday at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Coach Boyet Fernandez is satisfied with how his team is running after surviving a killer stretch that saw them play seven games in three weeks with a 5-2 win-loss record.
However, he still sees some minor miscues that the Hawkeyes need to fix.
“May mga mali pa rin, but we just have to be consistent and not be complacent in our coming games,” Fernandez said.
Cignal may be well-rested, but the team will be undermanned with Davon Potts leaving the team to focus on his obligations with San Beda. Thus, Raymar Jose and Jason Perkins will do much of the heavy lifting for the Hawkeyes.
Potts’ absence may just be the biggest difference as the Hawkeyes brace for streaking Wangs, which has won two straight games for a franchise-best 3-2 start in the Foundation Cup.
Wangs coach Pablo Lucas believes that his team has finally developed much-needed chemistry, ever since he first formed the squad.
“Unlike before na may wall, ngayon naging isa na kami,” Lucas said. “Kita naman sa mata ng mga players na ayaw talaga nilang matalo.”
Wangs pulled off a massive upset last Monday, when it turned back Racal, 93-84, thanks to the combined efforts of Robbie Herndon, Chris Bitoon, and Michael Juico. The Couriers would surely love to add Cignal HD to the list of giants they have slain.
Meanwhile, school-based squads Centro Escolar University (2-2) and AMA Online Education (0-4) battle at 5 p.m.
The CEU Scorpions have won back-to-back games, with coach Yong Garcia believing they have already adjusted to the changes in their roster. “Ang focus pa rin naman namin is mag-improve every game,” said Garcia.
CEU will again lean on Rod Ebondo and JK Casino, while AMA is banking on Ivan Villanueva and Andre Paras.
