Entering his final year at Emilio Aguinaldo College, Fil-Nigerian Sidney Onwubere had a very productive summer heading into this year’s NCAA season.
With a second place finish in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup plus a notable performance in the Filoil Cup, Onwubere is grateful for the experiences that he garnered and now hopes to reward his Alma Mater.
“Malaking tulong siyempre sa D-League kasi mga kalaban ko doon mga professional at star player ng iba’t-ibang team,” Onwubere recalls.
“I’m very grateful to my coaches sa Racal, sina Coach Jerry (Codinera) – marami silang naitulong sa akin at ngayon ina-apply ko sa EAC.”
Prior to making it to the D-League finals, Onwubere hit a three-point shot with 1.9 seconds left to bring down the Café France Bakers. Not known as a three-point shooter, he adds another weapon to his arsenal, something he hopes to put to good use in his last NCAA season.
Onwubere’s performance has gained notice and should further solidify his bid to enter the PBA. For now, however, his goal is to help EAC reach the final four for NCAA Season 93.
“Talagang goal is to make it to the final four para may kumpiyansa ako to go to the pros,” said Onwubere.
“Our goal is one game at a time. Kung sino sunod na kalaban, doon kami magfo-focus and then until we make it to the final four. Kasi hindi naman kaagad naming iisipin na makalaban ang San Beda kung hindi pa kami nakakapasok sa final four.”
Currently the team captain of EAC, he admits that playing in close games is something new as far as his college career. He, however, admits that the PBA D-League finals experience has helped him improve as a player.
“Noong naglalaro ako sa Racal, meron game against Cignal, siguro Game 2. Nasa bench ako at dikitan ang laban, sinabi ko sa kakampi ko na hindi ako sanay. Kasi kapag sa EAC, third quarter pa lang – wala na. Sobrang nakalayo na kalaban. “
“Ngayon siguro nasasabi ko sa teammates ko na ‘guys, marami tayong makukuha if we are winning. We are getting positive notes, mananalo tayo and it will make us stronger, give us more confidence in our next games.”
