Only Manny Pacquiao can tell if it’s time for him to leave boxing.
Veteran ring official Danrex Tapdasan wants Pacquiao to call it a career, but nobody can make that decision for the world champion.
“Ako I want Manny Pacquiao to retire. But if you ask me kung magre-retire na si Pacquiao, my take is he will not retire until the time he knows himself na wala na talaga,” Tapdasan said on Saturday during his appearance on DZMM’s “Fastbreak” with Freddie Webb and Boyet Sison.
Tapdasan said the problem with fighters is they’re usually last to concede that they’re already past their prime.
“Sadly the great fighters, Oscar de la Hoya, Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roy Jones Jr., Bernard Hopkins . . . 100% sa mga great fighters napansin ko, hindi sila nagre-retire after a win. They retire after a loss,” Tapdasan said.
“(Ang boxer) ang huling-huling nakakatanggap na ‘tapos na ang karera ko.’ ”
Tapdasan said Pacquiao has already had a career filled with great achievements so his legacy is secure.
“Wala na siyang kailangang patunayan. Siya lang sa lifetime natin at sa next generation, wala nang makakahabol sa 8-division world champion,” he said, adding that Pacquiao doesn’t have to end his career with a victory.
“For example lumaban ulit si Manny Pacquiao either (Jeff) Horn or kahit sino . . . manalo ulit, titigil ka pa ba? Nanalo ulit.”
Pacquiao recently lost a controversial decision to Australia’s Jeff Horn, a fighter who was expected to be handily beaten by the decorated boxing veteran.
The WBO reviewed the scoring, but even the independent judges commissioned by the sanctioning body awarded the victory to Horn.
“It proved na sa boxing ay very subjective ang judging. Hindi exact science iyan. Lima ang nag-score, kahit silang lima hindi nagkasundo sundo,” Tapdasan said.
“Eight lang rounds ang napagkasunduan nila. Iyong official judges, 7 lang out of 12.
“Ang pinatunayan lang ng review ay the fight was close. It could have gone either way.
“Kung nanalo si Pacquiao ng 1-2 points, it’s justifiable. Natapos ng draw ang laban? Justifiable pa rin. Dito nanalo si Horn ng 2 points sa 2 of 3 judges, sa tingin ko justifiable pa rin. Ganun ka subjective ang tingin ng judges sa boxing.”
