MANILA, Philippines — Miss Philippines Rachel Peters has advanced to the top 16 of the 66th Miss Universe after dominating votes on social media.

“It’s such an honor. To represent the country means the universe to me,” Peters told judge Steve Harvey.

Peters admitted she was nervous after the candidates from Asia were announced. 

“But I believe everything happens for a reason,” she told backstage host Ashley Graham.

The announcement of wildcard finalists drew huge cheers from the nervous audience, especially when Peters’ name was mentioned.

Peters has been the front runner of the online polls, along with fellow Asians Miss Thailand and Miss Indonesia. Online votes are among the factors in choosing a wild card candidate

Completing the top 16 along with Peters are Miss Venezuela, Miss Jamaica and Miss China.
