SINGAPORE – Angela Lee weathered a striking storm from Brazilian challenger Istela Nunes to win via second round Anaconda choke to retain her ONE Atomweight world title at ONE Championship: Dynasty of Heroes, Friday evening at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Nunes showed in the early going what she was capable of tagging Lee with solid strikes, before the champion managed to get the fight on the ground and punished Nunes with punches before threatening the challenger with a deep Twister submission attempt. Nunes survived, but it was clear that she needed to steer clear from the mats to implement her gameplan.

The erstwhile-unbeaten Brazilian started the second round strong again, hitting Lee with some clean punches, but again, the champion had her way and got hold of Nunes, locking in a deep standing Anaconda choke before bringing the fight to the mats. Nunes tried to hold on for as long as she could, but Lee’s grip tightened, forcing the challenger to tap out in the 2:18 mark of the second round.

Lee improves to 8-0 in her mixed martial arts career, while turning in her second ONE title defense.

In the co-main event, reigning ONE Welterweight champion “Funky” Ben Askren made quick work of Agilan Thani, submitting the Malaysian challenger via arm triangle in the first round.

It didn’t take long for Askren to do what he does best, and that’s grind his opponents out as he took Thani down almost instantly after getting a hold of him. From there, it was complete domination as the former Olympian trapped Thani in a crucifix and rained down some vicious punches, before finding a way to lock in an Arm Triangle choke for the submission.

The match lasted only two minutes and twenty seconds, with Askren improving to 16-0 in his career, while turning in his second ONE title defense.

Also victorious in Singapore was the debuting Zebastian Kadestam, who pulled out a stunning upset KO win over former title contender Luis “Sapo” Santos.

Santos had controlled evey aspect of the match until midway through the third round wherein Kadestam stuffed a takedown and landed a knee to put the Brazilian on his back. There, Kadestam unloaded two more vicious knees that separated Santos from his senses.

Kadestam, the former PXC Welterweight champion makes a splash in his debut as he inserts himself in the ONE welterweight title picture.

In the highly-anticipated super grappling match between former ONE Lightweight champion Shinya Aoki and decorated grappler Gary Tonon, the latter emerged victorious, winning via Heel Hook in the 7:46 mark of the match.

Aoki controlled the majority of the match, but Tonon, known for his leg locks, managed to trap Aoki in a Heel Hook to force the submission.

After the match, Tonon revealed that he would be transitioning into MMA.

Our very own Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio was also victorious in Singapore, scoring a Split Decision win over Thailand’s Anatpong “Mak” Bunrad.
