Shooting three birds with one stone, ‘Wansapanataym Presents: Amazing Ving’ allows beginners Awra and the KissMarc tandem to shine; it also trains a spotlight on the much-missed duo of Roderick and Carmi

It’s been two decades since Carmi Martin and Roderick Paulate were seen together onscreen.

Awra Briguela as Super Ving

One of the well-loved dance duos in the ’80s, Dick – as Roderick is fondly called – and Carmi became household names through their show “Tonight With Dick And Carmi.” They continued their partnership into the ’90s via the sitcom “Abangan Ang Susunod Na Kabanata.”

Now, the two will be seen together anew on television via a special episode of “Wansapanataym Presents: Amazing Ving.”

At a recent press conference, both expressed excitement over the reunion.

Said Dick, “Sobrang excited kaming dalawa na magkita. Masaya dahil nakakapag-kwentuhan, reminiscing.”

Carmi, on her part, believes it’s well overdue.

“Iba ’yung impact ng Dick and Carmi ’pag nagsama,” she related. “Talagang maraming nagre-react kahit sa social media. And siyempre, ’pag kasama ko si Dick, sobrang napaka-challenging because ang galing-galing niya as an actor – drama or mapa-comedy.”

Dick thinks the show is a good comeback vehicle for him. He was last seen on the karaoke game show “The Singing Bee” in 2015.

The former politician also thanked Dreamscape, the production behind the show, for patiently waiting for him despite scheduling issues.

“Natutuwa lang ako na Deo (Endrinal , head of Dreamscape) did not give up on me. Nu’ng ginawa ito, I was leaving for abroad (dahil) may trabahong official,” he explained. “So parang feeling ko, ‘Naku sayang kasi ang ganda nu’ng role na gagawin.’ Pero natuwa ako na nu’ng pag-announce nu’ng pag-uwi ko, sabi sa akin, ‘No, Deo will wait for you.”’

Though enjoying good chemistry Carmi and Dick were never linked romantically. With both still single, a reporter asked if they ever discussed the possibility of them being together.

Carmi related, “Nag-usap nga kami I think last week. Sabi ko sa kanya ‘Ano Dick, ikaw ba may plano pa mag-asawa?’ Tapos sabi niya sa akin, ‘Gusto mo tayo na lang dalawa?’”

She added, “Hindi ko masasagot ang tadhana. Kung tatangapin niya ang apat ko na aso.”

Roderick replied, “Ako naman ang takot sa aso!”

Turning serious, Carmi reiterated she’s fulfilled with life as a single woman and marriage is not part of her plans.

“’Pag masyado nang matagal, tapos naging comfortable ka alone, parang minsan nasasanay ka na mag-isa,” she shared. “Tapos okay naman lahat. Hindi ko na hinahanap ’yung kulang from other people kasi I’m whole.”

Happy na ako ngayon at tsaka maganda na medyo nai-declare ko na I feel complete and happy with the Lord.”

Dick, on his part, said he’s leaving that part of his life to God, saying, “Thy will be done.”

If anything, both are thankful to have each other as friend.

“Right now, what we know is, we love each other so much and we respect each other so much as friends,” Carmi said.

Little Roderick?

In the show, Carmi and Roderick play parents to the character of child star Awra Briguela.

Carmi sees similarity in Awra and Roderick, acting-wise.

“Kapag nakikita ko si Awra, si Roderick talaga eh. Sabi ko nga Dick, ‘Oh ’di ba, tama ako?’” she said.

This is the first-ever lead role of Awra. As Ving, he is an ordinary boy who transforms into the powerful and pure-hearted Super Ving and uses kindness as his weapon against the forces of evil.

In the same interview, he revealed Roderick is actually his inspiration.

Awra shared that Coco Martin encouraged him to watch some of Roderick’s old films such as “Bala At Lipistik.”

Dick only has good words for Awra.

“Magaling at nakakatuwa siya. So sana ipagpatuloy lang niya ’yung magandang ginagawa niya,” he said.

Loveteam on the rise

Aside from the Roderick-Carmi tandem, the show features newcomers Kisses Delavin and Marco Gallo.

Ever since they emerged from the “Pinoy Big Brother (PBB)” house, Kisses and Marco – KissMarc to fans – has been tagged as the newest love team to watch out for.

“Wansapanataym Presents: Super Ving,” is their first-ever TV series and both are very thankful for the opportunity that was given to them.

“Talaga pong pinaghahandaaan namin (’yung role) kasi sobrang natutuwa kami na binigyan kami kaagad ng work after ng ‘PBB,’” Kisses said.
She is thankful the show allowed them to become closer.

“Kasi parang nagka-distance kami eh. Hindi po kami nag-u-usap nu’ng paglabas namin (ng ‘PBB’ house) kasi ang dami din pong nangyari duon eh. Pero slowly parang we opened up to each other at nagkaroon ulit ng chance para maging friends kami.”

On the show, Kisses and Marco play the role of bullies Chelsea and Warren.

Known for her sweet image, we asked Kisses how she prepared for her role.

“Nanood po ako ng films like ‘Mean Girls,’ tapos from that po, parang nagustuhan ko ’yung pagiging kontrabida,” she said. “Sabi ko it would be fun din pala if mag-portray ako ng ganu’ng role for a change lang. Para maipakita ko din ’yung other side ko sa acting.”

Meanwhile, Marco said the show will not just be entertaining but it will serve as an eye-opener as it tackles bullying.

“Ang bullying po kasi ang isa sa mga pinaka-problema sa buong mundo,” said he, who also experienced being bullied at a young age.

“Gusto kong galingan po ’yung pagganap ko dito para maipakita ko sa mga tao na hindi po laro-laro ang pang-bu-bully,” he said. “And this show po, it’s not about kung ano ’yung sinasabi sa’yo ng tao, it’s all about kung paano ka magste-step up. It will really teach you a lesson.”

Also starring Bianca Manalo, AC Bonifacio and Ellen Adarna, “Wansapanataym Presents: Amazing Ving” airs Sundays at 8 p.m.
