BUTUAN CITY – The New People’s Army (NPA), armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), claimed responsibility over the series of attacks all launched on July 18 in Surigao del Sur.

In a live broadcast by a local radio station here on Wednesday, a certain “Ka Amihan,” spokesperson of Bagong Hukbong Bayan Front Committee 19-B of the CPP-NPA Agusan del Sur South Surigao del Sur Command admitted that their guerilla fighters chopped and destroyed the banana plants of Dole Philippines from 11:30 a.m. up to 3:10 p.m. on July 18.

Amihan also admitted responsibility that their guerilla fighters also destroyed six agricultural hauling trucks by a Dole Philippines contractor, a banana firm that owns a wide plantation area in Tago town, Surigao del Sur province.

The spokesperson also added that the “punitive action” against Dole Philippines was for their alleged “grabbing” of farmlands of poor farmers and the use of chemicals for aerial spray that causes damage to the environment and the health of Tago town residents.

Amihan also denied that the NPA in the area did not receive money from the banana company.

The management of Dole Philippines has not yet issued any statement pertaining to Amihan’s allegation.

In another statement on Wednesday, a certain “Ka Ariel Montero,” spokesperson of the NPA Regional Operational Command, said their offensives included the disarming of Vice Mayor Emmanuel Suarez of Cortes town in Surigao del Sur also on July 18.

In that operation, “Ka Ariel Montero” said their guerilla fighters carted away from the vice mayor’s house two caliber 45 pistols, a shotgun, two grenades, a VHF radio and four boxes of bullets for .45 pistol.

In Sitio Bioborjan, Barangay Rizal, Surigao City on July 18, the NPA guerilla-Front Committee 16 torched the equipment owned by the Mamsar Construction including a forklift, backhoe and multicab. However, the NPA in that area has not yet issued a statement pertaining to that burning incident.
