The New People’s Army (NPA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), on Tuesday denied any hand in Sunday’s brutal killing of Barangay Mapawa chairman Felipe P. Achas in Surigao City.
The Front Committee 16 of the CPP-NPA Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee said the slain barangay chairman “never considered a target for liquidation”.
The strong denial was made by “Ka Oto,” who introduced himself as spokesperson of the Front Committee 16.
The spokesperson said the report linking the NPA to the brutal killing was a mere “speculation”.
Ka Oto claimed that the killing of Achas was likely perpetrated by the authorities, particularly the military. He did not elaborate.
It was recalled that Achas, 49, was gunned down by motorcycle-riding assailants before his horrified constituents in Purok 1, Barangay Mapawa, Surigao City. on Sunday (Sept. 10) while the city was celebrating its fiesta.
The perpetrator, described to be roughly 45 to 46 years old, standing 5’8” and wearing a bull cap fled aboard a waiting motorbike after making sure that Achas was dead.
Investigators of Surigao City Police Station are still conducting an investigation to determine the identity of the perpetrators.
