NEW GUY. Two first-year players showed Arellano the way to victory.

Arellano High School lost its championship-caliber core from a season ago.

Carlo Abadeza and Guillmer Dela Torre graduated while Lars Sunga suffered a season-ending injury even before the NCAA 93 Juniors Basketball Tournament.

Fortunately for the Braves, their other guys are raring to step up as first-year players Kobe Camacho and Fred Segura combined to take down much-improved San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 86-80, on Thursday at the Arellano Gym in Manila.

Camacho and Segura scored 23 and 20 points, respectively, to help Arellano get on the win column following a season-opening loss five days earlier. “Silang dalawa na nga siguro yung makakatulong ngayon sa amin,” head coach Tylon Darjuan said post-game.

Indeed, Camacho, a transferee from Lyceum of the Philippines University, is providing the slashing Sunga once did while Segura, a recruit from Davao, is turning into the gunslinger Dela Torre was known to be.

Aaron Fermin also added an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double in just 20 minutes to make sure the home team would be able to exit their gym with their heads held high. “Ako, mas kinabahan ako sa nangyari ngayon e. Buti na lang, nakuha naman namin yung panalo,” Darjuan said.

It definitely didn’t come easy, though, as the new-look Staglets were still threatening at 75-78 with 1:13 remaining.

That was the closest they could come, however, as Camacho and Segura connived for all but three points in the Braves’ 8-2 run to close the contest.

Nonetheless, the visitors from Recto earned the respect of Arellano and Darjuan. “Iba na talaga yung linalaro ng Baste e. Sabi ko nga sa mga player ko, hindi na natin pwede maliitin ang Baste,” he shared.

San Sebastian’s gallant stand was fronted by Alex Desoyo who collected 24 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists.

This decision, coupled with another close loss to San Beda High School last Saturday, drops them to 0-2.
