Known for doing romantic-comedy films, Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla now take on their first-ever action series ‘La Luna Sangre’

One of the first steps Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla took in preparing for their latest series is to train in Pekiti-Tirsia Kali, a Pinoy style of martial arts using traditional blade art called Kali.

“’Yung ginagawa naming Pekiti ay halo-halo. Meron siyang arnis, merong balisong at tsaka firing,” Daniel said in an interview.

They also took a crash course in Chinese martial art Wushu.

“I’m very proud of Kathryn kasi ang dali niya makuha ang mga tinuturo sa kanya,” the actor said. “’Yung mga choreography ng instructor, very natural sa kanya kasi gusto niya (’yung ginagawa niya). Siyempre ’pag di mo naman gusto, walang mangyayari, eh.”

Kathryn is thankful to Daniel for being supportive.

“During training, minsan kasi siya ’yung nagtuturo sa akin, nagko-comment siya sa akin parang kung paano ’yung form ko, ’yung sipa ko, para hindi awkward,” she said.

Daniel talked about taping in Quiapo.

“Sobrang saya nu’ng mga fight scenes. Iba ang experience na ’pag nagawa mo ng tuloy-tuloy, sobrang sarap ng gawin,” he said. “’Yun ’yung mararamdaman mo sa lugar na ’yun. Ngayon na lang din ako nakapunta duon after ilang taon so ang sarap sa pakiramdam.”

Kathryn said getting bruises won’t stop her from giving her best.

“Super pasa pa lang naman (ang nakukuha ko) pero normal naman na ang ganu’n (sa isang action series) so naiintindihan ko.”

Asked about using a body double or stand-in, she said, “Siyempre kung kaya mo gawin, gagawin mo kasi iba ’yung fulfillment ’pag nagawa mo talaga, so basta kaya ko, gagawin ko.”

The story of “La Luna Sangre” is hinge at a prophecy which says the child of the most powerful vampire and the chosen wolf will end the evilness of the vampire imprinted with the cursed ink.

Kathryn said she finds doing her character on the show, Malia, quite challenging as “sobrang layo (niya) sa totoong ako.”

It also takes time for her to memorize the choreography of the fight scenes.

“I-me-memorize mo na ’yung parang choreography ng suntukan, at the same time ’yung emotions (din). Duon ako medyo nahirapan kasi ang daming iniisip. ’Pag nagkamali ka lang ng konti, masasapak ka talaga so kailangan ingat talaga and mas focused (sa ginagawa),” she explained.

“La Luna Sangre” is the fourth television show for the onscreen partner.

“Nu’ng sinabi ’to sa amin sobrang natuwa talaga ako kasi matagal ko na gustong gumawa ng iba,” she said. “Para pagkatiwalaan kami ng ganito kalaking project, sobrang happy ako.”

The show is the third installment of “Lobo” topbilled by Angel Locsin and Piolo Pascual in 2008; and the sequel to “Imortal” (2010) which paired Angel with John Lloyd Cruz.

Kathryn admitted feeling stressed over their performance. She only finally let out a sigh of relief upon seeing the trailer.

“Nararamdaman ko po kasi ’yung bigat nito. Sobrang nakakakaba lalo na at bago sa amin ’to, ’yung action. Nag-a-adjust pa kami pero more than the kaba, mas excitement ’yung napi-feel ko sa project,” she said.

She revealed the show was supposed to be made after their movie “Got To Believe” in 2013.

Well, timing is everything and here it is now.

Turnover

Angel believes Kathryn and Daniel deserve the project.

“Excited akong makita si Daniel mag-fight scenes kasi idol ko ’yung Tito (Robin Padilla) niya pagdating sa fight scenes. Nakasama ko na rin si Robin at marami siyang naituro sa akin kaya parang hindi naman ako magtataka kung magpakitang gilas rin si Daniel dito pagdating sa fight scenes.”

Kathryn and Daniel are flattered to hear all the good words from the original lead cast.

“Sabi ko nga kanina gusto ko ng mag-melt, alam mo ’yun kapag may approval from the original cast, and alam natin sila talaga ’yung nag-start nito. ’Pag merong blessings nila, parang mas lalo kang gaganahan and alam mo na wala kang nasasagasaang tao and nandiyan ’yung full support nila,” Kathryn said.

Richard Gutierrez also advised the lead actors to take training seriously while enjoying the process.

“Mahalaga din kasi ’yun kasi kahit pagod ka na, puyat ka na, ’pag hindi mo ine-enjoy mababaliwala eh, so just enjoy the momentum, enjoy the moment,” he said. (With report from Bhenj Agustin)
