Narcopoliticians, loose firearms cited by PNP for ML extension » Manila Bulletin News

Narcopoliticians who remain at large and the proliferation of loose firearms in Mindanao have been cited as the major reasons for the recommendation of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to extend  Martial Law administration in Mindanao.

(PNP) Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa

“The identified narcopoliticians who are supporting the cause of the Maute Group are still at large (and) we still have to account  (for) them,” said Director General Ronald dela Rosa, PNP chief,  when asked for the main reasons he cited for Martial Law extension.

The second main reason, according to dela Rosa, is the proliferation of loose firearms, especially in Marawi City and nearby areas.“We have to account for loose firearms before we lift the Martial Law,” said dela Rosa.

He said the military also submitted its  own position paper. But the official said both the police and the military are for the extension of Martial Law in Mindanao.

Dela Rosa said the PNP only discussed matters pertaining to law enforcement.

Dela Rosa said PNP did not request for a time frame nor for geographic expansion of the Martial Law implementation when he submitted their position paper to President Duterte on Friday last week.

Dela Rosa said he is not sure if the extension of the Martial Law implementation would be announced at President Duterte’s State-of-the-Nation Address next week but he said it could be earlier.

He said what the police and the military have submitted would just serve as a guide for the President.

“The Office of the President will consolidate that and that will be the ground of the President for the extension of Martial Law,” said dela Rosa.

“We did not cite any time frame, it’s up to the President,” he added.
