MANILA — Geje Eustaquio came up with the best performance of his career on Friday night, as he avenged his defeat against Thai striker Anatpong Bunrad in the undercard of ONE: Dynasty of Heroes.
The Team Lakay flyweight displayed superb footwork, counter-punching and timing to frustrate the physically stronger Thai fighter and hack out a split decision at Singapore Indoor Stadium.
“It was a beautiful exhibition of standup fighting . . . This was a rematch and it really was, for my money, the best performance of his career,” fight commentator Steve Dawson said while calling the bout.
Eustaquio bucked a slow start in the first round when the rangy Bunrad came out strong in an effort to intimidate the Baguio-based fighter.
But as the fight went on, Eustaquio regularly connected his leg kicks and countered Bunrad with right straights and elbows whenever the Thai charged in.
In the third round, Bunrad had a tough time connecting his shots, although he did score a takedown when he caught Eustaquiao’s head kick.
The Filipino, however, was able to roll his opponent and went on top of Bunrad near the final bell.
Bunrad, who fell to his 3rd defeat in 8 fights, won via split decision during their first encounter in 2015.
Eustaquio also bounced back from his first-round loss against Toni Tauru in 2016. He now has a record of 9-5.
