He won’t make gaya-gaya by falling on his knees preferably at a public place or on national television but when the right time comes, Matteo Guidicelli said that, yes, he would propose to his girlfriend Sarah Geronimo his own way.

“Honestly,” Matteo told Funfare, “I still have to think about that. And when the time comes, I guess you’ll hear about it.”

That “right time” may not be too far away. After all, Sarah is already close to Matteo’s family (that considers her as a member) while Matteo has won the affection of Sarah’s strict parents, thanks to his patience, perseverance and persistence.

Already, Matteo is talking about saving for his future family. In cooperation with Sun Life Asset Management Company, Inc. (SLAMCI), he recently launched a series of vlogs (video blogs), which aims to teach Filipinos about how investing can help make their #lifegoals come true, his (and Sarah’s included).

Dubbed “Make It Mutual,” the vlogs tackle topics relevant to personal finance, such as growing one’s money, beating inflation and investing regularly. To make it easy for the viewer to relate these to real life, the modules demonstrate in themes familiar to them, like travel, fashion, and fitness, among others.

All videos will be shared via social media to make them readily accessible.

“I’m thankful for the opportunity to lead another financial literacy campaign for SLAMCI. It’s definitely relevant and timely,” Matteo said. “I myself have life goals I’d like to pursue, and I’m happy to share that ever since I ‘made it mutual’ with SLAMCI, I’ve been well on my way to achieving all those goals. It would be great if more Filipinos can experience the same.”

Back to Sarah who joined  Matteo when he celebrated his 27th birthday in his native Cebu last March 26.

If and when, would he and Sarah get married abroad, which is also the in thing these days among moneyed people?

“I’d like to keep it simple,” he said. “’Yung gusto ko ‘yung family and friends and loved ones are all there lang, regardless of the location.”

Here’s Funfare’s exclusive interview with Matteo:

I know that you can live comfortably without showbiz having come from a well-to-do family, and that showbiz is not forever — here today, gone tomorrow. So how do you prepare for a showbiz-less future?

“People would say that I grew up with a family that will always support me, etc., etc. Part of my life goes by and I started by myself. I started alone. My dad (an Italian) started 30 years ago in the Philippines with nothing also. He said he just had P500 in his pocket, not knowing how to speak in English, going around Cebu looking for products to sell, to export back to Italy.

“So he started with nothing also. I’m very lucky of what he did — he can pass it on, and I’m gonna pass it on to my kids…you know, the cycle. Well, I like to do things on my own also, know how to start on my own and make money by myself. It doesn’t mean I don’t have to be in showbiz. Showbiz is like my passion, my love, my work. It’s something I want to do, it’s something I like to do. I’m not doing this just because I’m obligated to do it. But this has become my job, this has become something I do — I love to do and doing it.”

How are you preparing for your post-showbiz years?

“Siempre, you always have to think about the back-up plan because all of us are not in one place forever. But I’m very lucky that my career has been going well…it’s there. You know, it’s not boom na boom; it’s just there. I’m happy how it’s running, it’s stable kumbaga; I’m really blessed with that.

“And in showbiz, anybody can overtake you anytime, anybody can take your spot. You know, it’s just a cycle, you need to always be prepared, you have to save. Like, I’m very lucky with my endorsements, things I really believe in, especially Sun Life which really teaches me how to invest, how to save my money properly.”

Aside from your restaurant in Cebu, how else do you invest your money?

“Siempre when you’re with Sun Life, they give you realistic points on how to invest your money. With Sun Life, I invest on mutual funds kumbaga. Mutual funds are something I thought I’d do because I always thought it’s intimidating how (it works). But I have a financial adviser who shows me how realistic it is.”

How would you convince other people to get insured by Sun Life?

“Investing is really intimidating to me at first. But Sun Life makes it so easy. You could start investing with only P5,000. The videos we’re putting out, #MakeItMutual, are based on terms anybody could understand. And with the campaign, with the videos we’re making, we are targeting everybody. We are targeting millennials, hopefully to make them understand and convince them to start saving early.”

Are you like other actors who are brand-conscious? Do you shop based on the brand? Are you an impulsive buyer?

“I think the industry made me become like that. Siempre when I grew up, I didn’t really care what brand I was wearing even if showbiz tends to make you brand-conscious.”

What’s the most expensive thing you have splurged on? Are you willing to share?

“Yeah. I mean, clothes are now really expensive, shoes are now very expensive, especially the branded ones. And I have to admit sometimes, I tend to fall into the trap. You have to be realistic about what you spend on; you have to be realistic about not spending more than you earn. That’s very important.”
