University of the Philippines encountered stiff resistance from Technological University of the Philippines in the opening set before pulling off a 25-20, 25-9, 25-13 victory yesterday in the women’s division of the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Lady Maroons buckled a slow start before finding their usual fiery form to pick up their first win in Group B after losing to the Adamson Lady Falcons in five sets.
Diana Carlos paced UP with 14 points highlighted by 11 kills, even as Isa Molde chipped in 12 points including six service aces.
The Lady Maroons dictated the game tempo with 18-6 and 15-3 leads in the second and third sets by exposing the Lady Engineers’ lethargic plays.
So dominating was UP that the Katipunan-based squad limited TIP to only two attack points in the second frame.
The Lady Engineers failed to regain their composure after the second set as the Lady Maroons simply showed too much experience.
“Inayos lang namin yung first ball namin at saka hindi namin minadali yung mga atake namin,” said Carlos.
TIP coach Achilles Paril shuffled his lineup to find the right combination, but failed to get effective results from his stalwarts as they struggled with only 18 hits, two blocks, and one ace.
Jean Jinon topscored for the squad with six points, while Alyssa Layug finished with only five points as the Lady Engineers sank to their second straight defeat.
