Manila Bulletin Hollywood correspondent wins in Los Angeles Press Club’s 59th Southern California Journalism Awards » Manila Bulletin Entertainment


Janet Susan R. Nepales, Manila Bulletin’s Hollywood correspondent, won third place in the Los Angeles Press Club’s 59th Southern California Journalism Awards for her article on “A Proud Pinoy Moment” in the News – Foreign Correspondents/Reporters category. The awards ceremony was held recently at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles.

Other awardees during the event included photojournalist Daniel Berehulak who received The Daniel Pearl Award for courage and integrity in Journalism (whose photo essay on the drug war in the Philippines won a Pulitzer Prize), Los Angeles Dodgers announcer/broadcaster Jaime Jarrin who received The Bill Rosendahl public service award for journalistic contributions to civic life, Shawn “Jay Z” Carter and Harvey Weinstein who both received The Truthteller Award for contributions to public discourse and cultural enlightenment of our society, CNN’s Jack Tapper who received The President’s Award for impact on media and NBC News Andrea Mitchell who received The Joseph M. Quinn Award for lifetime achievement.

Based in Los Angeles, Nepales is a University of Santo Tomas Journalism cum laudealum who was recognized by the Filipina Women’s Network (FWN) as one of the “100 Most Influential Filipino Women in the World” in 2012 and 2013. She was recently elected as Executive Secretary of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) that presents the coveted Golden Globe Awards annually.

Nepales is the first and only Filipina member of the 74-year-old prestigious HFPA which is also known for its philanthropic efforts to give funds to charities, foundations, scholarship and international disaster aid relief. HFPA made a $25,000 donation to UNICEF Philippines in aid of tropical storm Sendong victims in 2011, and again gave $100,000 to the same organization for victims of super-typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in 2013.

Nepales, together with her husband Ruben, were awarded Entertainment Journalists of the Year, by The Outstanding Filipino Americans (TOFA) for 2016 at the Carnegie Hall in New York. Nepales is also a co-author of the first FWN book entitled “DISRUPT: Filipina Women: Proud. Loud. Leading Without A Doubt.”
