Mark Magsayo weighs in for his Pinoy Pride 41 main event bout against Daniel Diaz of Nicaragua.
It was back in 2013 when the boxing world first saw a glimpse of what Mark Magsayo could do inside the ring.
Roughly a month shy of his 18th birthday, the kid from Tacloban, Leyte made his professional debut at Pinoy Pride 20 in Cebu, blasting Melton Sandal by knockout in just over two minutes.
Looking back at in now, you could say that it was a sign of things to come.
Four years, fifteen more wins, and eleven more knockouts later, Magsayo, now known as “Magnifico”, is set to compete at yet another Pinoy Pride event in Cebu, Saturday evening.
This time however, Magsayo, will be on the marquee as he makes his main event debut against Nicaragua’s Daniel “El General” Diaz.
“Masaya ako kasi nung unang Pinoy Pride ko, Pinoy Pride 20, lumaban ako, undercard ni Jason Pagara. Ngayon ako na yung main event, sa Pinoy Pride 41,” Magsayo told ABS-CBN Sports.
“21 na series na yung nagdaan, so sobrang saya ko kasi umabot ako sa ganitong pagkakataon.” Magsayo added.
Since making his professional debut back in Pinoy Pride 20, Magsayo has evolved into one of the country’s brightest young prospects in boxing, even being labeled as ‘the next Manny Pacquiao”, with his fan-friendly fighting style and explosive knockout power.
And while getting the main event slot is a already a big deal in itself, it’s only the first step in Magsayo’s ultimate goal, which is of course one day becoming a world champion.
To do that, he plans to use the spotlight as a chance to show the world that he’s very much deserving of the bigger fights and the opportunites at gold.
“Ipapakita ko sa lahat ng mga tao na karapat-dapat ako na lumaban para sa mga world title, mga big fights,” said Magsayo. “Pangarap ko ‘yun eh, yung mag-world champion, kaya dapat makamit ko yun.”
At just 22 years of age and 16 fights in, Magsayo has only begun to scratch the surface of what he can potentially do in boxing.
If he can continue to churn out impressive win after impressive win, it’s highly likely that this won’t be the last time we see the ALA Boxing standout’s name on the top bill of a Pinoy Pride event.
