MANILA, Philippines – The Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates are through to the Final Four of the FilOil Flying V Preseason Cup for the first time ever after routing the San Sebastian College Golden Stags, 86-71, in the quarterfinals on Wednesday in San Juan.
Spencer Pretta knocked down three three-pointers in the second period to help Lyceum break the game open, 43-35, at halftime. The Pirates then remained in complete control in the second half to march to the semifinals for the first time in the history of the tournament.
“Credit goes to the players, they really played well,” said Lyceum coach Topex Robinson after the game. “In the last two practices, I wasn’t here, but the coaches really did a great job in preparing the team.”
“They just really put in the work, knowing that they really have to be mentally tough against a San Sebastian team that is a really good team, a well-coached team,” he added.
Pretta finished with 17 points, making five of his 10 attempts from beyond the arc, while CJ Perez contributed 14 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists though he also committed seven turnovers.
Wilson Baltazar had 11 points, and Jasper Ayaay contributed 10 markers for the Pirates, who shot 40% from the field and assisted on 25 of their 36 field goals in the game.
San Sebastian was within 11 points, 47-58, with 90 seconds to go in the third quarter when Perez took control. The “Baby Beast” drilled a triple, then threw down a one-handed dunk off a steal to make it 63-47.
They went on to lead by as much as 23 points in the fourth period, 82-59, before the Stags pounced on the Pirates’ turnovers late in the game to trim down the deficit.
Alfren Gayosa led San Sebastian with 14 points, while John Calma and Michael Are scored nine points each. The Stags’ main man, Michael Calisaan, only had four points though he did have 10 rebounds.
Lyceum will play the winner of another quarter-finals match-up between Far Eastern University and De La Salle University.
“At the end of the day, we’re gonna learn a lot from them,” Robinson said.
