Lyceum leaned on CJ Perez anew as the Pirates bested the San Sebastian Stags, 78-73, yesterday to remain unscathed in the 93rd NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
Perez, a transferee from Ateneo who took a year of residency before becoming eligible for the Pirates, unloaded 20 points on a 6-of-10 field goal shooting to steer the squad to its third straight win in as many games.
He was the only player this season to score at least 20 points in all his three games so far, while collaring five rebounds and dishing off three assists and two steals.
Jasper Ayaay and Mike Nzeusseu also starred for Lyceum with 17 and 10 points, respectively, with the 6-foot-6 Nzeusseu also grabbing 13 boards and one block.
San Sebastian dropped to a 1-2 card despite Michael Calisaan erupting with 28 points and 12 rebounds.
Earlier, defending champion San Beda leaned on a strong third quarter as the Red Lions dismantled Emilio Aguinaldo College, 81-69.
Sweet-shooting Davon Potts, Clint Doliguez and Jomari Presbiterio spearheaded the Mendiola-based dribblers in outscoring the Generals, 24-11, in that period to turn a 38-32 halftime lead to a 62-43 cushion.
From then onwards, it was San Beda all the way.
It was San Beda’s second straight win following a 76-52 triumph over College of St. Benilde last Tuesday to improve to a 3-1 win-loss record.
Presbiterio fired 16 points, Donald Tankoua flirted with a double-double of 12 points and nine rebounds, while Robert Bolick also sparkled with 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists for San Beda, which shot effectively with 36-of-66 in field goals for 54.5 percent.
