As the birth of their child nears, Kaye Abad and Paul Jake Castillo look back on how Eros worked on them

Some people say the best romantic relationships are those you didn’t even see coming. For celebrity couple Kaye Abad and Paul Jake Castillo, they didn’t think friendship would lead to making a vow at the altar.

“Never talaga pumasok sa isip namin na magiging kami,” Kaye recalled at the baby shower thrown for them in Cebu by Aprica. “Kasi magkasundo kami – but I can’t imagine kissing my friend!”

They were introduced to each other on the set of romantic-drama series “Alyna” in 2010.

“Du’n ko siya unang nakilala… kakalabas lang niya ng ‘PBB’ tapos naging close ako, si (Jason) Abalos, tapos siya – kaming tatlo,” she shared, adding she was more comfortable being around with the boys as “walang arte, mas bugoy.”

Even after the series, the two remained friends.

“Hanggang sa nawalan na siya ng girlfriend, nawalan ako ng boyfriend, tutuksuhin na nila kami ‘Alam mo feeling ko ba’t ’di na lang kayo,’” she continued.

Despite all the teasing, Kaye would introduce Paul to her other friends, like matchmaker.

“Sabi ko ‘You need a life, kailangan mo ng inspirasyon.’ Kasi ’yung buhay niya routine, triathlete, gigising siya, mag-training siya, mag-bike, mag-swim or mag-run tapos uwi na siya ng bahay tutulog na siya.”

However, no matter how Kaye tried to play Cupid, the ending was always the same.

“’Yung mga pinakilala ko sa kaniya sasabihin sa akin ‘Alam mo bagay kayong dalawa, parang mas magkasundo kayo,’” she said.

But when did the turning point come? Well, constantly hanging out did its trick. From Paul joining Kaye at her family dinners to watching movies together or roaming the mall, the relationship just leveled up.

It was when Paul went to Europe that Kaye got a grasp of, to use a line from a “Beauty And The Beast” song, something there that wasn’t there before between them.

“So facetime kami everyday, so sabi ko ba’t parang na mi-miss ko siya eh hindi naman ako ganito pero ewan ko baka nasanay lang ako na laging magkausap pagbalik niya galing Europe ’yun na, ewan ko, iba na,” she said.

When asked who initiated the first move, Paul joked: “Siya siyempre,” then turning to Kaye, laughing, “’Wag ka ng mahiya’ okay lang ’yan.”

After straightening up, Kaye said, “Parang wala, parang gradual lang siyang nangyari, parang nagkaintindihan na lang.”

Strong foundation

Kaye and Paul are thankful they started as friends.

Now that they’re married, how do they handle decision-making?

According to Paul, they always ask each other’s opinion.

“Usually naman we talk about it para mag-compromise. Hindi naman pwedeng isa lang ang magde-decide kahit papaano naman magkasundo kami pero magkaiba pa rin kami ng papananaw sa buhay,” Kaye added.

Does she believe the success of a relationship depends on the woman?

“I guess. Kasi ang babae mas (may) patience than sa lalaki. Babae ’yung mas vocal na mag sabi kung ano ’yung mali, ‘Let’s talk about it,’ but not lahat kasi ’yung iba mas patient ang lalaki but mostly, yes, babae,” she said.

Thrifty wifey

When asked about it, Paul admitted one of the things he likes about her is that she’s sensible in managing their finances.

Kaye is so practical she doesn’t mind getting hand-me-down clothes for their coming baby.

“I ask my friend kasi like sila Nikka Garcia. They say na don’t spend too much or invest in (clothes for) new born kasi mabilis silang lalaki, sayang lang. So, I don’t mind na hand-me-down (’yung iba), its fine,” she explained.

She is expected to give birth by next month and by now they have almost everything ready for the child’s arrival.

“So far kumpleto na halos, baby’s room na lang ’yung kulang,” she said.

What’s inside the bag they mean to bring to the hospital when it’s time for Kaye to go, we wondered.

“Depende sa sponsor,” Paul joked. “Manawagan ka…”

“Wala pa po akong sponsor ng diaper… kasi ang wipes meron na,” Kaye jumped right in, laughing.

Can hardly wait

The 35-year-old actress is excited to hold her baby.

“Pinaguusapan namin kung ano kayang ugali nito,” she said. “Siya (Paul) gusto raw niyang gawing athlete.”

Kaye hopes to return to show business a few months after giving birth.

“Definitely sobrang na mi-miss ko na,” she revealed. “Siguro kailangan kong i-balance ang time, hindi ko alam kung kakayanin kong mag-soap opera but guesting guesting for sure.”

In terms of nurturing their children, the couple will take their cue from the parenting style of Paul’s dad.

“I’ll definitely mold the child to be like how my father raised me,” was how Paul put it.

Will he use the belt in disciplining the child?

“Siyempre kailangan nilang dumaan duon,” he said.

Kaye cleared, “(Pero) ’yung spank lang siguro na ’yung sa kamay or very light hindi siguro ’ung talagang spank talaga. (Then) dapat after that you have to explain what they did parang they know hindi ’yung spank lang… Kailangan maintindihan nila na what they did was wrong and we’re just trying to discipline you so para hindi na nila gawin ulit.”

Paul revealed his dad sends him notes on dos and donts in raising kids. Kaye also gets tips from her mom.

Ouch!

Kaye is a bit nervous about giving birth as her threshold for pain is low.

“Excited ako at the same time natatakot ako kasi you will never know what will happen eh. But I always pray na normal and no complications so sana okay lahat,” she said.

Do they dread waking up at strange hours in the first few months of the baby?

“Kumpleto ako sa tulog talaga ngayon pero sabi nila kakayanin mo daw talaga (mapuyat) for your baby,” she mainatined.

Kaye wants to breastfeed her baby if that’s possible.

“Iba daw ’yung sustansiya niya,” she said. “May nabasa din ako na nag-a-adjust ’yung milk sa kung anong kailangan ng baby like kung may sakit…”

The two said it would be nice if the baby comes on Dec. 22, which happens to be Paul’s birthday. (With report from Jojo P. Panaligan)
