Lea Salonga is presenting an award at the 71st Annual Tony Awards today at the Radio City Hall in New York City.
She expressed excitement over the development on Facebook a few days ago.
“It’s official, I’ll be presenting at the Tony Awards this Sunday, June 11! It’s theater’s biggest night, and I am thrilled to be heading there!!!” she posted.
The internationally-acclaimed performer can’t wait to meet up with fellow Broadway artist. “Making a list in my head of the selfies I intend to take on Sunday!” she said.
Back in 1991, Lea won the Tony Award for Best Lead Actress in a Musical for her performance as Kim in “Miss Saigon.” She is the first Asian artist to win the much-coveted award.
This year, another Filipino-American, Eva Noblezada, who plays Kim in the revival of “Miss Saigon,” is competing for the Best Actress in a Musical Tony. “Miss Saigon” is also nominated for Best Revival.
Kevin Spacey, who won a Tony Awards in 1991 for his role in “Lost In Yonkers,” will be this year’s host.
Among the other presenters at the 2017 Tony Awards are Orlando Bloom, Scarlett Johansson, Anna Kendrick, Olivia Wilde, Taraji P. Henson, Josh Groban, Tina Fey, and Bette Midler.
The American Theatre Wing’s Tony Awards began in 1947 to honor “excellence in theater.”
It got its name from Antoinette Perry “an actress, director, producer, and the dynamic wartime leader of the American Theatre Wing.”
