“Yung kalaban ko is a world champion, so mas na-motivate mas galingan ko pa, kasi parang big break ito para sa akin,” – Arthur Villanueva (FILE PHOTO)
Fresh from his quick victory at Pinoy Pride 42 in Cebu, ALA Boxing standout ‘King’ Arthur Villanueva is set to enter the squared circle this November 4th, when he meets the undefeated reigning WBC World Bantamweight king Luis ‘Pantera’ Nery in a ten-round non-title bout in Tijuana, Mexico.
Originally scheduled to be a world title contest, the stipulations were changed when Mexico’s Nery tested for a banned substance in his title-clinching win over Japan’s Shinsuke Yamanaka in Tokyo.
And while it would be easy to get discouraged given such a development, the Bago City-native isn’t taking this oppornity for granted.
“Yung kalaban ko is a world champion, so mas na-motivate mas galingan ko pa, kasi parang big break ito para sa akin,” Villanueva shared with ABS-CBN News’ Steve Angeles.
While the WBC has not yet made an official ruling regarding Nery’s case, a Villanueva win could lead to a world title, one way or another.
Should the Pinoy emerge victorious, he could earn a world title shot against Yamanaka, or he could even be awarded the championship straight up.
Either way, ‘King Arthur’ sees this as another world championship fight.
“Parang world championship din, kasi champion yung kalaban mo, so parang ganun. Parang, kung matalo ko siya, champion pa din ako.”
The odds will be stacked against Villanueva however, as he walks into Nery’s hometown of Tijuana.
Still, the Pinoy isn’t fazed by the homecourt disadvantage.
“Talagang positive lang iniisip ko. Kaya ko manalo sa laban by win or by points, so pinag-aralan namin ni Coach yung style nung kalaban. Sa tingin ko malaki talaga yung chance.”
